Artist Index & Further works

This is a chronological list of the Artists in Grizedale, their residency dates (according to Grizedale Archive) and further artworks produced in Grizedale that were not part of the sculpture trail. It also includes descriptions of their time working in the forest.

I am including all Artists In Residence; crafts people, writers etc who didn’t necessarily site sculptures on the trail. This is unfortunately less detailed as the documentation for this is harder to come by.

Richard Harris

1st Residency: October 1977 to July 1978 (“Richard lived in a caravan onsite. He had to leave Grizedale between January and April 1978 as it was too cold” – Archive) (6 Months)

I assume Herbie photographed the wooden sculpture (maquette?) above, entitled ‘The Kingfisher’ and didn’t actually make it. Therefore who did? All I can assume is it was one of the artists there in 1990, possibly Keith Alexander & Colin Wilbourn, who were working on Heron and Swan at the time.

Cloak of Seasons – Hawkshead Hill– 1995?

cloak2webIMG_6877web

Photograph Taken Summer 2020

Not far outside of Grizedale, on Hawkshead Hill is Summer Hill Country House. “Summer Hill was bought by the Grizedale Society in the mid 1990s using Lottery funding, and could accommodate 4 or 5 artists”. This sculpture sits in the grounds of the house and is easily viewed from the roadside. On their website they list the title of this sculpture as Cloak of Seasons as well. It is so similar to the Grizedale Cloak of Seasons, I believe it could even be carved from the same tree. I presume Walter made this at the same time whilst staying at Summerhill.

2nd Residency: 1997

Sculptures Created: Threshold Figure, Coniston Figure

Coniston Figure – Water Bank – 1997

coniston-figureweb

Photograph taken from roadside 2018

This sculpture is not part of the sculpture trail nor a gallery exhibit. However it does have a strong connection to Grizedale. “Carved from a wind blown oak on the shores of Coniston Water. Commissioned by Bill Grant, founding director of Grizedale Forest Sculpture Park in Cumbria.”. This sculpture sits on private land on the shore of Consiton  near Lawsons park where Bill Grant use to live. It is almost identical to Threshold figure, though with wider rings.

“In counterpoint to the existing monumental sitings of sculpture within Grizedale Forest this set of photographic images represents a series of unconfirmed sightings of a rare, some say extinct species once considered common in he area. As tiny as ants, as fine as bees wings, these figures have been sighted in Grizedale this summer are there bogles once more on Bogle Crag? Tread softly and believe.” – Text from back of postcard 1
