Antony Holloway – Ridding Wood Trial – 1993
Material: Wood
Trail: Ridding Wood Trail
Theme: Nature
Form: Abstract
Maps Featured on: 1993 – 2005
Status: Removed, no remains
Quote from the artist – “In the middle of a footpath two interlocking walls of solid oak spiral upwards to a height of nine feet. The spirals are symbols of growth. The sculpture turns and grows as the trees twist and rise above. A turnstile is formed making people look back as they leave the rhododendron walk and enter an oak woodland.”
Positioned near the start of the Ridding Wood Trail, in the middle of the path. Two curving walls of wooden bricks that spiralled round and upwards. You could walk through the centre of the artwork, like a mini maze before carrying on on the trail.
Here are two maquettes for Spiral Growth. The first in ceramic is one simple curve, same as in the proposal above. The second in wood is the final design for the sculpture. Both are now kept in the Grizedale Arts office in Coniston.

“The surface and width of the path through the sculpture are calculated to allow passage for wheelchairs and children’s buggies. As with living wood public accessibility is increased by physical involvement and interaction.”

Photograph taken by Robzet approximately 1996
It was last listed on the 2003 map and so went between then and 2006, at which point it was removed completely.
