Quote from the Artist – “For the second piece the choice of site took a long time. I wanted to work in the old ‘oak forest’ again in a small gladed area… more open, much more evocative… I wanted to try and recreate a kind of ‘feeling’ by making a small arena with various things going on, the centre piece being the propped oak tree, and a small alter with a large carved oak boulder on top (much like a sacred rock). On each side were placed a hanging ‘offering table’ using hempen rope… I wanted the piece to be much less imposing but with a formal quality that would allow the viewer to walk through the work, discovering various things about the piece as one’s angle of vision changed.”

From ‘A Sense of Place’ Book 1984

It was on the Silurian Way down the slope besides where Seed now stands. It was positioned next to Lloyd’s other work Fortress. It was not on 1988 map so must have gone before then.

Artist’s other work in Grizedale –

Red Deer Wallow – 1983

The Fortress – 1983

Half Moon Stakes – 1983

Monument to Satterthwaite – 1983
