Quote from the artist – “When I arrived in Grizedale I thought it would be nice to work in natural materials I could find in the forest. I found beech and birch twigs which were quite subtle and blended into the shape nicely. To work in a new medium was a challenge that I have enjoyed.”
“It’s very calm working in the forest & very mysterious… I felt like I was being overlooked by inquisitive animals, which I know I was… one thing I learn about making outdoor sculpture is that it has to be much more resilient. I found that out when parents kept lifting their kids onto the stag.”
This was a large stag made out of small pieces of wood twisted together. It was sited near the visitor centre on the Millwood Trail. It didn’t last long, it does not feature on the 1988 map. If parents kept lifting children on to it that might contributed to why it didn’t last.
