Geddes made 24 ephemeral artworks dotted around the forest, seven are listed here.
Eric Geddes – Various – 1982
Material: Wood
Trail: Silurian Way
Theme: Nature
Form: Abstract
Maps Featured on: Unknown, pre 1986
Status: Removed, no remains
Quote by the artist – “I make ephemeral works using indigenous materials in response to the structure and feel of the landscape, which are then developed in photo works and sculptures. Four aesthetic terms, – sabi, wabi, aware, yugen, convey the essence of my approach, allied to a ‘mythopoeic’ sense of life.”
According to Aspects Journal, Geddes visited Grizedale 3 times and made 24 sculptures, most of which were designed to only last a short period. These are the 7 listed in the archive, I assume they were listed because they appeared on sculpture maps, even though they look extremely temporary. None lasted long enough to appear on the 1984 map. The sculptures were in various places around the forest.
One
Two lines of sawn up logs placed on a slope on the steep path from the visitor centre towards Grizedale Tarn.
Two
Multiple posts stood upright, wedged in rocks, positioned in a quarry at Breasty Haw.
Three
Four posts radiating out from the centre, positioned at an angle with a large stone slab in the centre, also sited in a quarry at Breasty Haw.
Four
Two tree trunks stripped of branches on all but one side, intertwined. This is in amongst the trees at Breasty Haw.
Five
As of number five, two trunks intertwined, above one another, at Breasty Haw.
Six
The top photograph shows sculpture six. A series of saplings one vertical, the others bent over to form an arch. Sited at Ormandy Intakes with a view of the Lakeland mountains covered in snow in the distance.
Seven
Positioned somewhere at Moor Top. This photo is from the archive, so not good quality. A number of posts positioned into an abstract form.
