This was a 3f ball created using pliable ash sticks, and weaving them together tightly so that the ball holds its shape. Sited just off a small path, on Carron Crags lower slopes, above the Silurian Way. Below a newspaper article from The Herald January 1984.

According to the archive this was one of many temporary artworks Goldsworthy made, but it was included on the 1984 map. The archive suggests it lasted until 1992 however it is not present on any map past 1987. Interestingly this piece isn’t listed in the Andy Goldsworthy Project book as a permanent sculpture, meaning it was deemed ephemeral, albeit a long lasting one.

I assume the other temporary or ephemeral artwork Goldsworthy made here includes the work that featured in the gallery as can be seen in this photograph. Both the cone and the framed fern are Goldworthy’s.
