Quote from the Artist: “The work is constructed with local Silurian slate and situated within an abandoned stale quarry… The quarry’s rubble heaps and voids hold evidence of great exertion by mankind as well as by nature. ‘Pyxis’ represents the centring of these forces, both physically and symbolically… the stone block acts as a receptacle for these energies. It is a Requiem for the quarry as well as for the ages.”
This cube constructed out of stones inserted at different angles. Just below the summit of Carron Crag originally sited in a small recess created from quarrying. The hillside at this time was barren, there were no plants or trees. Pyxis sat in this bowl camouflaged against the rocks all around it as seen here.
Photographs taken September 2017
Now nature has reclaimed the area and Pyxis is no longer hidden amongst a quarry but stark against a forest. It is itself slowly becoming covered with moss and small plants.
The waymaker, a mosquito, moved here after previously marking Wild Boar Clearing. Pyxis can be seen from the path so a marker is rather redundant here.
The marker has now been removed, sometime prior to October 2023.
