Quote from the artist – “I want to… create a sculptural form that openly celebrates a particular natural tor that symbolises the silurian land.”
“I want to free myself (and the viewer) into a refreshing use of stone, and to create a sculptural form that openly celebrates a particular natural tor that symbolises this silurian land”

Sited on the Silurian Way South of Grizedale Tarn. This large stone structure is created out of one continual spiral of slate threaded with wire into a tall serpentine shape.

I believe the maquette on the right of this photograph is for In Celebration of a Tor. It is housed in the Grizedale Arts office in Coniston. As there was no label I cannot be 100% sure but the simplified design mirrors the final sculpture above.
Photo Taken 2008
Originally the slate sculpture stood upright (as seen in the top photo). Over time gravity has taken its toll and it has now bent almost double. It seems to have stayed this way for a long while now, and so doesn’t seem to be getting any worse. The surroundings are changing, as the trees slowly grow up around it.
