“Only Breath is a steel sculpture made predominantly of air, inspired by the act of breathing.” – Quote from the artist.

One of three sculptures sited in Grizedale in the summer of 2021 as part of a television series by Sky Arts called ‘Landmark’. It is a competition to award a sculptor with designing a new large scale sculpture to be sited in Coventry. The three in Grizedale seem to represent the north region. One sculptor from each region will progress and a final winner chosen from there.

In the sculpture, wires connect the metal plates together. The wires spiral around the sculpture. Viewed from different angles the plates are either thick slices or almost invisible. Positioned high up on Moor Top, the view through the centre extends down the Rusland Valley to the water of Morecambe Bay.

As it is here for only a short while I do hope people make the trek to go and see it, (it is very remote from any other sculpture and forest trail). Personally my favourite of the 3 ‘Landmark’ entries.

I inquired about this sculpture in August 2022 and was told it had been removed due to damage from weather. In October 22 it was announced a new Colin Rose sculpture would be sited in this position and that Only Breath had gone to be displayed in Sheffield. This presumably means it will not be returning to the forest sadly.
