“A cactus amongst the trees, vertical and camouflaged, emphasised by its ‘ambush’ context.” – 1986 Map

One of three artworks by Frost at Bogle Crag along the theme of Cowboys and Indians. This was a cactus cowboy with revolver hands, in the midst of a fight. The surrounding trees had Indians poking their heads out, attacking from cover, at least 8 were hidden in the trees. These slowly disappeared over time. Also note the arrows sticking out of the cowboy’s trunk, and a Red Indian head with a tomahawk in his hand at the top, in the top photo.

Supposedly the ‘last stand’ was representative of the conflict between foresters and artists at the time. Specifically how many sculptures were in the forest. Though I am not sure if this was true or simply a rumour.

By 1995 the top face has weathered and now resembles more of a cat to me. This image is a composite of two photos we had, I’ve edited them together to show how it looked from the front.

Photographs Taken 1995

I’ve zoomed this photo up to show the Indian’s faces sticking out from behind the trees at the back. All you can see is one eye peeping and the feather on their head.

Last listed on the 1996 map. All three artworks were removed at once, two years at most after these photos were taken. I don’t remember them being decayed or damaged, certainly not enough to warrant removal. I think they were just a victim of sculptures being removed to maintain a constant number of around 80 as new ones were created.

Sculpture in other Artworks

Panayiotis Kalorkoti a resident painter in Grizedale during the late eighties and nineties often used Last Stand at Bogle Crag in his paintings. Below is a sketch featuring the Indians poking their heads out from behind the trees.

You can also see a small feather in the bottom right of this painting. Possibly the maquette for the sculpture. They are also peeping out from a box in the picture below.

The hatched held by the Indian on the cactus is drawn here top right. Further examples of other sculptures used in Kalorkoti’s work can be seen in the Gallery in the Forest Page.
