Quote from the artist – “The sculpture was the major piece I worked on at grizedale and after many weeks I finally incorporated a stone head and a carved duck in the figure. It was a struggle to site the figure. I first had to construct a platform and sink it into the water where I wanted the figure to stand. The figure was then floated across the pond to the platform, where I lifted it up into position and bolted it together.”
According to the archive, this sculpture started life as Marshland Figure, above, before turning into Figure in a Pond, below, it was added to over his residency and then again by Joanna Hull in 1988.
Joanna Hull made Circus in the same tarn as this one, in photos of which you can see this sculpture in the background. Listed on maps until 1997. I believe it actually went by the early 00s. It wouldn’t have been removed due to its location. It would have been allowed to slowly rot away into the tarn.
