Michael Winstone – Wood Heads – 1984
Material: Wood
Trail: Millwood Trail
Theme: Nature
Form: Figurative – Spider
Maps Featured on: ?, 1987 – 1997
Status: Removed, no remains
Positioned at the side of the Silurian Way track directly above the Visitor centre on Carron Crag. A wooden spider lying in wait below its web for its prey. The web consisting of lengths of wood suspended between two trees. Mike wondered if the “tree would eventually spin is own web of branches engulfing the sculpture over time”. It evolved over time “through a process of spending many days working, but also sitting silently in the forest observing the coming and goings of its inhabitants that you do not normally see unless you are still for some time.”
This photograph above shows the front of the sculpture, with the face of the spider looking at the camera. In order to see it you have to leave the path and walk around, otherwise you only see its back from the path. It was listed on maps until 1997 when it was removed completely.
