Quote from the artist – “From the forest track the sitka spruce seems to be a solid barrier. In the forest it is dark, quiet and carpeted with pine needles, hollow spruce acts as a filter through which to re-explore the light, sound, colour and space of the dense spruce.”

Text from the 1988 map

“It needed to be far enough into the forest so that it was away from the road but not so deep as to be impossible to find. I was going to make some sort of indication of where it was like an entrance. There was going to be a tunnel leading up to it… I never worked out a way of doing that satisfactorily. “

“I used branches that had been cut from recently felled spruce trees. The curve of the branches dictated the size of the sculpture. I found an inner tube from a tractor tyre near to my site and cut it into strips to tie the branches together. I try to use materials which are relevant to the place, not necessarily native”

Hidden amongst the dense pines up on Carron Crag. Below is a photograph of how it looked inside. As it was built amongst the trees, trunks of spruces can be seen within the sculpture. Both photographs above show people, from which you can get a scale of the size of the work.

From Grizedale Experience Book

Last listed on the 1996 map, apparently in the same year the are was clear felled, and as the artwork was built around the trees it was taken down with the felling. The top photo shows the artwork sagging under its weight so it may not have lasted for much longer anyway.
